“MAXILLARY AND MANDIBULAR JAW DEVELOPMENT WITH HOMEOBLOCK™ APPLIANCE THERAPY CAN REDUCE AIRWAY OBSTRUCTION, UPPER AIRWAY RESISTANCE AND LOWER OUR STRE

The medical profession is far behind when it comes to understanding adrenal gland problems. In 2011, they still do not recognize adrenal insufficiency, adrenal exhaustion or adrenal burnout as real health conditions. This is very sad, as the situation is so common.

The gene on chromosome 10 is called CYP 17; it makes the hormone Cortisol. Cortisol (hydricirtisone) Is a steroid hormone, or glucocorticoid, produced by the adrenal gland. Is is released in response to stress and a low level of blood glucocorticoids.

Cortisol is in every system of the body. It is a hormone that literally integrates the body and the mind by altering the configuration of the brain. Cortisol interferes with the immune system, changes the sensitivity of the ears, nose and eyes, and alters various bodily functions. When you have a high level of cortisol in the blood, you are by definition, "under stress." Cortisol is synonymous with stress. Chronic stress might be the most common disease in the industrialized world.

Upper Airway Resistance Syndrome (UARS) raises our cortisol level at night. See: (Hypothalmus, Pituatary Adenal axis).
(UARS) is a sleep disorder characterized by airway resistance to breathing during sleep, which often goes undiagnosed or masquerades as another problem. Headaches, myalgia, sleep onset insomnia, sleep maintenance insomnia, bruxism, anxiety and depression are all symptoms of chronic stress which can be related back to respiratory effort related arousals and (UARS).1,2

Dentists do not need an MD to diagnosis Upper Airway Resistance Syndrome. With a strong background in craniofacial pain we can recognize the symptoms in our patients and provide effective treatment protocols. Patients that exhibit symptoms of chronic stress can be tested with ambulatory polysomnography to determine if there is a pattern of arousal and light sleep all night long. If we can break the pattern of chronic stress and lower cortisol levels, it will take our patients out of sympathetic mode and slow down their pulse rate and give them a more restorative night's sleep. Homeoblock(tm) appliance therapy treatment, myofunctional therapy and breathing exercises can help with this problem.

Cortisol is synonymous with stress. Stress is with us daily in our high pressure society. It is what happens to our stress (cortisol) levels at night which is so important to our health and well being. If we have high levels of cortisol in our blood at night we are subject to sleep maintenance insomnia and a reduction in deep (slow wave) sleep and REM sleep3

Obstruction in areas 1, 2,or 3 can cause upper airway resistance and cortisol in the blood.

Maxillary development with the Homeoblock(tm) appliance reduces obstruction in area 1

Increased vertical height accomplished with a 5mm bite block on the 2nd bicuspid and first molar of the Homeoblock(tm) appliance lowers the soft palate and reduces obstruction in area 2.

Bringing the tongue forward through the teeth to the lips while biting on the bite block will contract and tone the genioglossus and reduce the obstruction in area 3.

The Homeoblock(tm) appliance therapy can be demonstrated to reduce UARS and result in less arousal and a more restorative nights sleep.
