Sleep-Disordered Breathing
During sleep, air should move freely and rhythmically in and out of the lungs via the nose and/or mouth just as while awake. When this normal breathing pattern is disrupted during sleep, "sleep-disordered breathing" is said to occur. Sleep-disordered breathing refers to a range of breathing disturbances, including apneas, hypopneas, snoring, and respiratory effort-related arousals. Sometimes the throat narrows enough to cause loud snoring and hard breathing, but not enough to produce apneas or hypopneas. Breathing in this situation can be difficult enough to wake the sleeper, an occurrence referred to as a respiratory effort related arousal (RERA).

Case Study:

The following patient was treated for 15 months with Homeoblock™ appliances, upper and lower. He was instructed and used myofunctional and breathing exercises in conjunction with the appliance therapy. It is postulated that maxillary development and mandibular development reduced upper airway resistance in the nasal airway and reduced pharyngeal airway resistance in the hypopharnx which resulted in an improved sleep pattern.

Please see the results:

Epigenetic morphogenesis.
Skeletal changes illustrate the body's ability to self correct.
Note: Change in jaw position and the results at the TMJ

CONCLUSION:

What we see here is epigenetic morphogenesis:

Morphogenesis (from the Greek morphê shape and genesis creation, literally, "beginning of the shape"), is the biological process that causes an organism to develop its shape.

In the adult patient these changes that we see here can only be attributed to genetic expression. Hence "Epigenetic Morphogenesis"
